Learn How to Apply for an Internship as a Student at UCLA

Who Should Apply?

UCLA will only give academic credit for Internships to students who have enough credits to be considered 3rd year in standing. Therefore, students in their first and likely even their second year will not qualify for academic credit. Moreover, we prefer to take students in their last one or, at most, the last two years of college before graduation. We will also consider students in a master's program or a graduate school. Therefore, if you are a first or second-year student, wait till you are further along before you apply.

How To Get Academic Credit?

The course for UCLA is 195 CE Internship, 195CE Internship, depending on your academic standing.

Requirements

1. 3.0 GPA Minimum

2. Junior or Senior Standing.

3. Must complete at least 80 hours of the Internship over 8-10 weeks of the quarter.

4. Must be able to commit a minimum of 12 hours a week to the Internship. This is an internship-specific rule.

Enrollment Process

1. Select a 195 CE course that fits with the Internship.

2. Create a 195 CE contract.

3. Request Dr. Yoo's signature on the Letter of Agreement.

4. Schedule an intake appointment.

5. Wait for the CE department to enroll you in the course.

Note: You must renew your contract each quarter you participate in the Internship. You cannot do the same subject for the 195 CE course twice; however, you can still apply under a different subject and receive credit (For example Fall Quarter, you apply under Neuroscience 195 CE, and Winter Quarter, you apply under Public Health 195 CE)

How To Use Academic Credit?

There is no limit on number of quarters you can have for academic credit for UCAL students. Therefore, you can do more than the 9 months of Internship, which is the length of our Internship, with approval and acceptance from the Internship. However, use your Internship months well if you want to spend your gap year with us. You have to apply to get a full-time paid Lead staff position for a gap year. There are only a few of these positions, and spending your academic months just before graduation gives you the greatest odds of making a good impression and getting a position.

Types of Internships

1. In Person Internship

The In-Person Internship is designed for students who are located near the clinic, such as those attending UCSD. This internship provides hands-on experience in a physical work environment where interns can directly engage with the team, participate in daily operations, and receive immediate feedback. It's an excellent opportunity for students to build strong professional connections and gain a comprehensive understanding of clinic procedures and workplace dynamics through face-to-face interactions.

2. Remote Internship

The Remote Internship is ideal for students who are not in close proximity to the clinic. This internship allows students to work from a distance, engaging in meaningful projects and tasks through digital communication tools. Interns will collaborate with the team virtually, manage their responsibilities independently, and develop valuable skills in remote work and time management. This option is perfect for students who are self-motivated and comfortable working in a virtual environment, providing flexibility while still gaining substantial professional experience.

"Though the Internship can be stressful and requires high amounts of dedication and effort, the experience is truly unique and cannot be substituted. The SD Neurosurgery Internship offers a glimpse into both the clinical and administrative sides of healthcare, and provides a tightly bonded community to grow as a physician."
