Learn How to Apply for an Internship as a Student from UCSD

Who Should Apply?

We prefer to take students in their last one or, at most, the last two years of college before graduation. We will also consider students in a master's program or a graduate school. Therefore, if you are a first or second year student, wait till you are further along before you apply.

How To Get Academic Credit?

The course for UCSD is AIP 197, depending on your academic standing. It requires a paper at the end of the quarter detailing your experiences with the Practice.

Requirements

1. AIP 197: 90 units completed and 2.5 UC GPA

2. Paper at the end of the quarter sent to the faculty advisor detailing your experiences.

Enrollment Process

1. Find a faculty advisor. Dr. Cory Root is the professor we have used for academic credit. He has agreed to be the advisor for all interns seeking academic credit.

2. Fill out the learning agreement for AIP 197 on InternLink.

3. Once this is approved, download a PDF of your learning agreement from InternLink.

4. Log into the Enrollment Authorization System (EASy) and indicate the course and units you request (you may request 6 units for the Internship because of the 15-hour commitment).

5. Attach the PDF of your learning agreement.

6. Indicate the proposed paper, which will be about a page-long recount of what you have done during your quarter at the Practice.

7. This request will be routed to Dr. Yoo and the faculty advisor for approval, then to the Registrar's office to facilitate enrollment.

How To Use Academic Credit?

You can only get academic credit for 9 months. Therefore, if you are an underclassman, then don't use up all of your 9 months of academic credit and then be unable to do the Internship in our upperclassman years. This is particularly important if you want to spend your gap year with us. You have to apply to get a full-time paid Lead staff position for a gap year. There are only a few of these positions, and spending your academic months just before graduation gives you the greatest odds of making a good impression and getting a position.

Types of Internships

1. In Person Internship

The In-Person Internship is designed for students who are located near the clinic, such as those attending UCSD. This internship provides hands-on experience in a physical work environment where interns can directly engage with the team, participate in daily operations, and receive immediate feedback. It's an excellent opportunity for students to build strong professional connections and gain a comprehensive understanding of clinic procedures and workplace dynamics through face-to-face interactions.

2. Remote Internship

The Remote Internship is ideal for students who are not in close proximity to the clinic. This internship allows students to work from a distance, engaging in meaningful projects and tasks through digital communication tools. Interns will collaborate with the team virtually, manage their responsibilities independently, and develop valuable skills in remote work and time management. This option is perfect for students who are self-motivated and comfortable working in a virtual environment, providing flexibility while still gaining substantial professional experience.

"Although this internship may seem very arduous at first, the program is incredibly rewarding. You gain valuable experience with every ounce of hard work you put in. I definitely feel more confident as an aspiring physician, but most importantly, I feel more helpful to the healthcare field as I contribute more in my own ways. A diligent work ethic and thirst for knowledge are essential traits to carry with you throughout this internship. You learn something new every day and are encouraged to put yourself out there."
